Etihad Airlines Considers Takeover of Air Berlin

Industry sources note that Etihad has been exploring the merits of the idea for weeks, looking at how such a takeover could be implemented and how networks would have to be realigned for the deal to make commercial sense. Those sources indicate that Etihad isn't at a decision-making stage and that the in-depth studies haven't been presented to its board of directors. CEO James Hogan declined to comment, though the company posted a boilerplate response: "As a matter of principle we don't comment on rumors and speculation."

Europe’s Environmental Challenge: Single European Sky by 2012

Source: air transport news - IATA
“After decades of talks and little action, failure to implement an effective SES is Europe’s biggest environmental embarrassment. In 2007, this failure resulted in 21 million minutes of delays and 468 million kilometres of unnecessary flight. This wasted 16 million tonnes of CO2. This crisis that is gripping the airline industry highlights the fact that airlines cannot afford the EUR 5 billion cost that this brings. And neither can Europe afford the impact on its competitiveness.

This must change fast,” said IATA Director General and CEO Giovanni Bisignani in a keynote address to the European Air Transport Summit being held in Bordeaux. IATA fully supports the European Commission’s performance-driven approach. This was proposed in the SES II Package proposed by Vice President Tajani in June. “We need binding performance targets at the national and community levels, functional airspace blocks (FABs) coordinated by a strong network manager with harmonised safety oversight through EASA, and the enabling SESAR technology to allow a Single European Sky to deliver its promised benefits,” said Bisignani." European Route Changes Ready For 2009

Source: Aviation Week
"Eurocontrol has reached agreement on a swath of route changes that will be introduced in March, aimed at reducing congestion and improving efficiency. The route changes for 2009 represent the second stage of a wider three-year airspace redesign effort. The first raft of the redesign was introduced this year, and the last will be implemented in 2010, said Joe Sultana, who heads Eurocontrol’s Airspace Network Planning & Navigation unit. The three-year plan — known as ARN Version 6 — is intended to improve 1,600 routes and 60 airspace sectors. This will reduce the overall European route network by 0.3% — making it just 3.35% larger than if the most direct routes were used. Eurocontrol estimates this will reduce fuel burn buy 72,000 tons a year. These benefits are evenly divided between the three stages."
